Beijing debut for Sky-Skan's hi res record breaker

Sky-Skan has announced the debut at China’s Beijing Planetarium of what it says is the world’s highest resolution digital dome theatre.

The upgraded attraction, which features a 23m diameter screen and seating for 600 people in a concentric arrangement, now boasts a Definiti® 8K projection system reported to provide four times the detail of the company’s original Definiti 4K offering.

Definiti 8K uses Definiti HD lenses and six Sony SXRD 4K projectors, handling 24 HD streams and stitching 53 million pixels into one continuous ultra-high resolution image. After allowing for blending and masking, the final image resolution is 35 million unique pixels (35 megapixels).

Definiti is a full-dome digital theatre system capable of real-time astronomy shows in addition to other sciences, entertainment and art.

Definiti theatres include Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum, University of Notre Dame, ‘Imiloa Planetarium (Definiti 3D: the world’s first 3D Stereo planetarium), Horizon Planetarium (Australia), and the Queen Mary 2.
